After so long

I can now personally attest that motherhood warps time and each day passes by like a blink of an eye. This is the reason why this space has been neglected for so long. Just like that four months of maternity leave has come and gone and I’m back at work. I’m still trying to find my jive and balance work and taking care of my little angel. Good thing our nanny arrived a week before I had to go back to work.

So how are things since I last checked in? Everything is going quite well. I adore my Bee and I still can’t believe that a love this strong can exist. She is doing really well, she eats and sleeps very well. She likes to smile and giggle when we talk to her.

I got used to less hours of sleep, breastfeeding is still going well. During my first three days back at work I still manage to express milk. The nanny that we hired is coping with the new environment and with bee.

I sure hope that this would be the start of me being able to post more regularly in this site again. I sure missed it.

How old is old?!?

(via)

The past couple of weeks have been crazy! (or I’m just making excuses for completely neglecting this space for a while now. Thing is I have posts lined up I just couldn’t find the time (and energy) to edit photos that go along with the post.

So to ease my way back and to get my blogging mojo up and running again, I have decided to take up Niko on her tag. There is only one question actually, how old is old?

Isn’t it thought provoking and I must say, with my pregnancy and all the stuff we’ve been doing to prepare for the coming of our little angel, I’ve been thinking about this question for some time now. However, I’m really not worried about the age, per se, what I’m thinking about is how wise or mature have I become over the years. You see, I’ve always believed that one can grow old without being any wiser or one can be young but be full of wisdom beyond his years. Age for me is relative, just this year when I turned 28, I told honey that I don’t feel anything different from when I was 21, seriously. But now, I think I would have a different feeling next year when I turn 29, coz then I’m expecting to have matured more and to have gained more knowledge and experience after going through a pregnancy and giving birth to a new life that we love and care for more than life itself.

Thinking about it, this is a tough question “how old is old?” and to be honest I don’t know the answer. Is it the wrinkles, the bifocal glasses or the persistent rheumatic attacks on one’s knees that signify you’re old? I really don’t think so. I told honey once that even when we aged, I still want to travel with him, do our weekly dates and explore things that we have never tried before. I know that with age comes a certain degree of limitation on a body’s capabilities but it’s really in one’s heart and mind. So I say, I think one is old when his heart looses the desire to live life to the fullest and one is old the moment he allowed his heart to tell him so which causes him to loose vigor and enthusiasm. In my opinion, being old is not the number of years you’ve lived but the moment you’re hunger for life ceased to exist and you’re content to stare at a blank wall waiting for something inevitable. And I do hope and pray that I will never see that day.

How about you, what do you think, how old is old?

R-E-S-P-E-C-T

In my mind, I have believed that two of the most important things in a relationship are fidelity and respect, maybe not as high on my list as love and devotion but would definitely be in my top five. I firmly believe that you cannot say that you love someone without being faithful or respectful of him.

Over the weekend, a friend of my invited me for lunch, she said that she needs to vent out her frustrations with his hubby. Being the dutiful friend, I obliged. From what I heard from all her stories, her main issue with her hubby is respect. It’s nothing major really, simple stuff that sometimes, when we get overly familiar with someone, we tend to ignore. I believe when it comes to respect, not just the grand gesture counts, actually I think with respect, the littlest of things add up to more.

Ok, I know she is a friend so I have a tendency to take her side but I just have to agree with her when she asked me if it’s too much to ask not to be ignored when she talks no matter how angry his husband is. I just feel that its common decency, when someone asks you a question, the most civilized thing to do is respond. No matter how angry you are, you simply don’t let go of your respect for the one you love.

I know that being with someone, no matter how much you love that person, is sometimes tough. When I got married, I knew that it will not be always a bed of roses. But no matter how tough it gets, both of you simply must make an effort, no matter how big of an effort it is, to not loose your love and respect, at the peak of a heated argument, for that person because in the end, when everything has calmed down, the regret of having disrespected the one you love will linger. I have a rule, when I fight with someone I love, I try to keep it clean, no matter how hard it is, I try to stick with the issue at hand and be level headed. Then again that’s just me.

Thankful

(photo from flickr)

I’m thankful for the man I see when I wake up,
Whose mere hugs and kisses make my heart stop.
I’m grateful that I sleep like a baby through the night,
And ‘coz just before I doze, I hear, “I love you, sleep tight”.

I’m grateful for the roof over my head,
and for the warmth and comfort of my bed.
I cherish those hearty meals coupled with resounding laughter,
But there is nothing more exhilarating than a playful banter.

I’m thankful that I see a bright future coz of my past,
And that I’m full of hope even when the sky is overcast.
I’m thrilled by the sun, whose warmth can rejuvenate,
But I also long for lazy afternoons only a downpour can create.

As I look around, I can’t help but appreciate
the miracles, the magic, the wonders, even fate.
I have been a witness to how life can be so pleasant,
If only we can learn to live, not the future, but the present.

So today, as my life counts another year,
I can’t stop my smile, which goes from ear to ear.
Coz I can’t think of any other phrase more fitting,
But “I’m thankful” to portray how I feel about the life that I’m living.

as i was trying to write something on my birthday, all the words that are popping in my head seem to rhyme so I though might as well make a poem :-)

Return with a tag

My body finally gave in and I was down with cough and cold and muscle pains... name it, i've got it in the past two days. Thank God I feel much better now although my voice is still not the same and i still sneeze a lot. I guess its also the time of the year to catch a virus.

It's nice to go back to my blog and find a cute tag from Niko. It's quite simple actually, there are several questions and i have to answer them by searching through Google images and i have to choose an image on the first page of my search. Oh and of course tag other (7) bloggers to do the same.

1. The age of my next birthday

2. Place i would like to travel

3. My favorite place

4. A favorite thing

5. My favorite food

6. My favorite color

7. The city i reside now

8. The city i was born

9. My college major

10. Name of your first lover

11. A Bad habit

12. A hobby

13. My current wish lists ( Max of 3)

It was fun doing this tag. I am supposed to tag other bloggers to do the same and as I customarily do, I'd hate to limit the fun to just a few people, so instead of tagging bloggers in particular, I'm tagging everyone who wants to join in on the fun. Enjoy your weekend everyone.

In Transit

(photo from flickr)
When honey and I were on vacation in Manila about two years ago, we spotted this cutesy neon pink travelling bag, immediately I told him that we have to buy it! I was already thinking of the convenience it would bring each time we travel. You see, before that, all our travelling bags were mostly black and you can just imagine my frustration at the end of a long haul flight, tired and sleepy and excited to get out of the airport, when I struggle to find the luggage that is mine simply because it looks like everyone else’s. I was also thinking that having a travelling bag that is the same as everyone else increases the risk of me loosing my things because someone else might take my bag by mistake. And when you are travelling a long way, the last thing that you want is to be inconvenienced and loose all your things. So I was happy with my trusted neon pink luggage, no more difficulty identifying which is mine from then on, I recognize my bag the moment the conveyor belt spats it out and I was convinced that from then on no lost luggage for me, until yesterday.

Honey picked up a friend from the airport last night who is visiting us for a couple of weeks. As I heard them enter the door, I immediately rushed to welcome our visitor. I was surprised that all he had with him is a back pack that is not even full, after all he’s staying with us until new year. That is when they told me that his luggage was lost. It is so inconvenient for him especially he is visiting at the full swing of winter and all his winter clothes are in the bag. And guess what all they gave him for this huge annoying incident is an emergency pack that contains what? A toothbrush, a toothpaste, and some other toiletries. Hello! Can these toiletries give him warmth as he steps outside where its 1 degree Celsius. I told him that he should have demanded that they at least buy him a winter jacket or gave him at least a change of clothes. So far, we still don’t know when his luggage will resurface. I really do hope that airlines, who charge you an arm and a leg by the way, would have a more sensible and concrete response to cases like this and not think that giving a customer an “emergency kit” is enough compensation for the inconvenience of a lost luggage.

This only goes to show that one can only be so cautious, there are several things that might happen that is way beyond our control. Thank God this has never happened to us before, and hopefully not in the future. I’m hoping that my cutesy neon pink bag is not only convenient when collecting our luggage at the conveyor belt but also a lucky bag that will not get lost. :-)

Sun kissed

I love it when we get a sunny day during winter. It doesn’t mean that it’s warmer but at least it’s bright and lively. Such is the case today and it perked up the start of my day instantly. I didn’t thought it would be coz it was raining last night and when I left this morning to go to the gym, I had to be very cautious as I walk coz some parts of the pavement were covered with ice and it was very slippery. Oh well, that’s typical Dutch weather.

While I was walking through the hall in the office, I couldn’t help but stare out the window, it was really beautiful out there, the sun was reflecting on the pond that was just outside, the trees were golden brown as the light trickles through the branches. As I look at the trees lined outside, I can’t help but be amazed, just a couple of weeks ago, all these trees were teeming with leaves but today, not one of them is left. I wonder how much longer we have to wait to see the pond turn into to ice this year.

We don’t get a lot of days like this during this time of the year in this part of the world, so I’m really very thankful for moments like this when the weather is lovely and I’m inspired to take a moment and appreciate the beauty that is around me.

Caught by Surprise

I was tagged by Niko yesterday however, the moment I arrived in the office, my phone died on me so I cannot do the tag and I completely forgot about it by the end of the day... Sorry! I only remembered it this morning right after I went to the gym and about to call honey. The tag says that I have to take a picture of myself at the moment I received the tag, (no changing of clothes, no fixing of hair and post the picture without editing). So I immediately took my picture right then and there, inside the locker of our office gym hehe. I hoped for a better backdrop but hey I didn’t want to cheat.

Apologies for the blurry quality of the photo, i was running late and besides I'm not sure if I'm allowed to take another shot.

I'm supposed to tag other people to do this as well, but hey why set a limit. If anyone of you, upon reading this post, wants to take the challenge and post a sponteneous photo of yourself... please do so. Oh, and don't forget to link back here.

Random Stuff

Ever since I got back from Singapore, things haven’t settled down yet adding to that is the fact that it took me a while to get back in synch with Amsterdam time. These are my excuses for not responding to Niko’s tag sooner. So today, I’m taking a breather from posting another Singapore entry and would like to share 8 random things about myself.

1) I’m all about purple, violet, indigo, lilac, lavender, anything that is in that shade really tickles my attention. Other people say that it’s a sad colour but I see them as elegant and sophisticated.

2) My first home away from home is in Dubai. I’ve lived there for two years and I found it to be a great city to get to live in. I have lots of fond memories of this city, I have friends still living there and I would want to come back and visit one of these days.

3) I’m completely useless when it comes to directions (haha). Honey’s always worried if I need to travel by myself coz he knows that I’m not good when it comes to navigating in a new place. Surprisingly, in spite of my freakishly short term memory when it comes to directions, I have never been lost, I always manage to find my way, thank God.

4) Honey and I collect DVDs, I would sometimes deliberately side step a DVD shop coz I know that I would end up buying more DVDs than I would manage to watch. In our collection of DVDs, my favourites would be Friends (entire collection), Alley McBeal (entire collection), Ever After, Harry Potter (all the sequels), among others. There are also a couple of DVDs in our collection that I haven’t watched.

5) I love, love, love to shop BUT contrary to what other people think, I am not at all brand conscious, in fact, I find great satisfaction each time that I score an outfit, or a pair of shoes, or a bag that is of very good quality and at very reasonable prices. Honey’s never afraid to let me loose inside a shopping mall coz he knows I’m a very reasonable buyer. (Haha)

6) I never dreamed of being a CPA, when I was a kid I wanted to be a journalist and a lawyer but when I was already applying for college, my papa encouraged me to take accountancy instead telling me that it’s the most reasonable platform to launch a career in law. However, after passing the board exams, my intentions of furthering my studies in the field of law was clouded by my intent to establish an audit career.

7) Looking back on my college days, the activities that I miss the most would have to be basketball and debate. I was a part of the women’s basketball team and have been actively participating in debate competitions in and out of the campus during my entire college life. Both of these activities trigger a rush of adrenaline that I sorely miss.

8) If I have to choose the next city that I want honey to take me to, that would have to be Venice, Italy (Honey… hint, hint!). I have always loved Italian food, apart from that this city, in my view, is one of the most romantic cities in the world and it has always been a dream to go there.

I had fun responding to this tag, thanks Niko, it’s not everyday that you get an opportunity to reveal some tidbits about yourself.

Now, I’m tagging anyone of you who is interested to share some trivia about yourself.

The rules:

1 - Each participant starts with eight random fact/habits about themselves.
2 - People who are tagged need to write their own blog about their eight things and post these rules.
3 - At the end of your blog post, you need to choose eight people to get tagged and list their name.
4 - Don’t forget to leave them a comment telling them they’re tagged and to read your blog.

And another small thing, if you decide to participate, I would love for you to link back here in the comments section so that I could learn a little bit more about you!

Me, myself and “I”

I have been meaning to post this entry for days now but I didn’t realize it will take me a while to finally think of the last item on the list. Toni, a couple of days ago, tagged me to write 10 things I love that start with the letter “I”. Initially, I was on a roll, I listed 9 things within 15 minutes but then the last one is always the hardest one to come up with. And so the list:

1) INRI – (Iesvs Nazarenvs Rex Ivdaeorvm) one of the biggest factors in my life, if not the biggest, is my faith. In him, I find solace and peace. He gives more meaning to my triumphs and he provides solace and peace in times of trouble. I truly believe that there is no love greater than his.

2) Inay – I never called my mom “inay” but I think she would have liked it, same way that Mama Lits liked hearing it from the son of our couple-friend who’s kids call them “inay and itay”. As they say, a rose by any other name would smell as sweet and this term of endearment rightfully reminds me of my mom and how every now and then I ache to see her or hear her again.

3) Intricate Thoughts – I always had a passion for writing and when I was still in school, I had several opportunities to express myself in the written word. However, nowadays, being an accountant doesn’t really fulfill this desire. That is why I thank God for blogs, I was able to create Intricate Thoughts were I can express myself and it provides me a venue where I do something that is close to my heart.

4) Indigo – purple, violet, blue violet…. These are the colors that I really go for. This was the initial motif that I want for my wedding but then again I decided to go for rainbow, why just go for one when you can have them all.

5) Ice Cream – Ben & Jerry’s New York super fudge chunk, Haagen Dazs’ chocolate chip cookie dough, Arce Dairy’s blueberry and much much more… Pure indulgence.

6) Italy – Never actually been to Italy (although I’ve been bugging Honey to take me here soon). I have always dreamed of going to Italy (Venice in particular). It just looks to romantic and the food seems gastronomic. Haven for Pizza and pasta fanatics, how can I go wrong?

.
7) Incense and Candles – lavender, vanilla and peppermint are normally the scents that I go for. These make my bubble bath experience more relaxing and something to look forward to at the end of a busy week

8) Imagining – day dreaming, fantasizing. One of the many things I try to find time for is my alone time, this is when I allow my mind to soar in the depths of the ocean of fly the borderless freedom of the sky, this is the time when I make a vivid picture of the future that I want to have. I just love the freedom and the mind exercise it provides and it gives me a better perspective of my future decisions.

9) Inasal – too bad I only enjoy them each time I am back in Philippines. The smoky flavor of the chicken (I prefer breast) dipped in a mixture of soy sauce, kalamansi and some chili compliments the rice so well, it is so simple and yet so captivating.

10) “I love you” – of course! How can I write about ten things that I love that starts with letter “I” without writing this phrase. I would have to say that my normal day would start and end with this phrase. I feel like my day is not complete without me saying this to Honey and hearing it from him.

It was fun making the list, really want to keep the ball rolling so if any of you wants to be tagged, tell me so that i could give you a letter!

All of a sudden …. I’m 27

As far as I could remember, I was not the type of kid who looks forward to Christmas so that I could send a wish list to Santa. I remember, though, that I look forward to my birthday and write a list of wishes that I would mention when I do my birthday prayer. One thing I’ve realized though is that every year that passes by, my wish list to God became shorter and shorter until the time came (of which I don’t know when) when my wish list became a thank you list.

I also remember, every year when I was still in primary school, my birthday will not be complete without a party at our house with all my classmates coming over to celebrate the day with me. During those times, I would stage a tantrum attack whenever my mom would suggest that we just dine out or just celebrate my birthday intimately. Now, I long for nothing more that to go home to my husband so he could take me out to dinner to celebrate my day.

It’s now that time of the year again and my thank you list is longer than it ever was before. I think that as I grow older, the more I realized how blessed I am and the more I come to believe that if you have your faith in God, he blesses you in ways you could never thought possible. I guess I am at the point in my life when my heart is filled more with thanksgiving rather than petitions. As I pause and ponder on my past years, I realized that as I mature, I opt to spend my day with an intimate group of people that I love and loves me back rather than throw a big bash for a crowd who are just there for the food and treats you nicely simply because its your birthday.

Ah, it’s that time of the year again when another calendar has passed by my life. I am quite happy though with how I spent my year for most of it was spent creating a nice home for our family and being with the one that I love the most. I have also seen places that I have always dreamed of seeing and experienced a lot of things that I have aspired to experience.

When I go down on my knees to do my birthday prayer tonight, definitely my prayer would be more of a thanksgiving rather than petition for the past year has been blessed far more than I could ever thought possible. I had a well lived year and I am looking forward to another great year with faith and love in my heart.

Many thanks to all those who remembered and sent their greetings, I have and always will treasure all of you in my heart.

Seven Turning Twenty Seven

When I was a kid, about seven years old, I remember each morning on my way to school, I see this lady clad with a smart corporate jacket and skirt paired with a towering high stiletto heels click clacking her way to the public transport waiting area where I am waiting for my school service. I recall staring at her admiring how sophisticated she looked and how I can’t wait to grow up and wear the same pair of shoes. I don’t know what it was but in my mind I pictured this lady as a 27-year old woman and I thought to myself when I’m 27, I will be wearing those chic corporate outfits with lofty heels matched with a pair of hosiery.

My admiration for this woman actually inspired my young imaginative mind to paint a vivid picture of what I will become when I am 27. I clearly recollect all the details that I have added to the appearance that I have sketched for myself. I even wrote all the details down my small journal to make it more official. During those times, I dreamed that when I’m 27, I’ll be married to the man of my dreams (even at the age of 7 I believed that the ideal age of getting married is 25). I’ll be working as a successful lawyer for one of the top companies in Manila. I even remember noting down that when I am 27, unlike the lady who takes public transport, my husband will be driving me to the office everyday. (I was a hopeless romantic even as a kid, I think it was the influence of Disney cartoons)

Suddenly, I wake up and it’s already the 14th of January 2008, my birthday month and I am turning 27 in a couple of days. I can’t help but look back and wonder if I did myself justice and fulfilled my list when I was a kid. Well for starters, I am married but not to the man of my dreams at seven years old who was Sleeping Beauty’s prince charming with his blond hair and blue eyes and his proud horse, but to a man even more than just a dream, a man who was an answered prayer. I am not a lawyer but a Certified Public Accountant and I am not working for one of the top companies in Manila but for a leading company in Europe. Oh, I do wear click clacking heels when I go to the office and I do wear those corporate attires, mostly skirts so I think my seven year old self would be happy about that.

It feels so surreal, as I look back at the dreams I envisioned when I was a kid. I might not have hit the mark on most of what I have enlisted but I can’t say that I’m dissatisfied. As I mature in that 20-year-gap, I have learned to believe that happiness is not possessing expensive things but sharing what you have with the people in your life, it’s not the places you’ve been to but who was holding your hand while taking in the beauty of a new place. Happiness is having people that you love cherish those glorious moments of success with you and having them by your side in times when the world seem to crumble. Looking back, I just can’t thank God enough for all the blessings he showered upon me and continues to shower me everyday.

In the end, I think my seven-year-old self would be more than happy with where I am today. I know I am.

All set for 2008

I have always loved the exhilarating feeling that New Year brings. I don’t know if this feeling is influenced by the colorful display of lights in the sky or the overflowing champagne (or any alcohol for that matter), but New Years just fill my senses with an invigorating feeling. I think that this sentiment is more influenced by the thought that New Years offer a new beginning to everyone. Each and every New Year, I feel that I get a new shot at things. This is the time when I can leave all my woes and excess baggage behind and receive a clean slate on all new endeavors that I want to undertake.

I believe that another great thing about New Years is that it gives us this yearning to look back in the past and ponder on how to make amends on our previous mistakes, and provides an opportunity to be grateful for all the blessings that we have received. While watching the first season ender of Ally McBeal, an old American series that I find so entertaining, John Cage, one of the characters said, “If you think back and replay your year and it doesn’t bring you tears of either joy or sadness, consider the year wasted”. These lines stuck with me and I just had to oblige and look back at the year that was. Doing so, I was overwhelmed by how enormous the things that I have gone through in 2007, both good and the not so good and John Cage couldn’t be more correct, the mere flashback of the year that was simply brought mist into my eyes. The past year was a melting pot of experiences that etched memories that will forever remain with me, and it has also presented challenges that made me a much stronger individual, ready and able to face any trial in the coming year.

Above all, I believe that the greatest thing about New Years is that it presents everyone with a gift – Hope. Every new calendar that we hang on the wall symbolizes another chance for all of us to do better, to seize the battle that was lost and to grab opportunities that will define us as an individual. .

Personally, I have very high hopes for 2008. How can I not? I am armed with the glories of the wars I have won in the past year. I am empowered by the lessons of my failures and I have the people around me who offer me comfort and love.

100 things to do before 35

When I was still working for PwC (then Joaquin Cunanan and Co.), I remember having a chat with my scrabble buddy (he was my seatmate most of the times and during slack periods we would play scrabble that is why he became my scrabble buddy) and he mentioned having a list of things that he wants to do before he reaches the age of 35. I thought it was a good idea so I made my own list, and that was about 3 years ago. I never really thought of a hundred things I got to around 50 on the first sitting and every now and then I update the list.
I lost my list when we move here in the Netherlands my flashdisk sort of went crazy and would not open now so I tried to recreate my list. Just then, I realized that there are too many simple things that I could do before that age that will make my life well lived. Very simple things like finish reading the Harry Potter books, the Da Vince Code, the Angels and Demons or watch all the Star Wars movies. I vividly remember having added them in my list 3 years ago and I felt a surge of accomplishment having ticked them off my list (well I have'nt finished reading all harry potter books i have yet to start the recent one released Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince and there is 1 more to be released if my information is correct). There were also huge things that I was able to tick off my list like getting married to Junfer and going to Europe to mention a few, things that I know has changed my life tremendously.
The point is having a list of things, however big or small it may be, guided me on the path that I really want to take as I reach a tender age. It reminded me of things that i wanted to do, the places that I wanted to go to, people that I wanted to meet, things that I wanted to become. It gives me a picture of what I would want to happen in my life and creates a goal for me to achieve.
Until now i still have'nt listed a hundred things to do but I'm getting there and going through my list gives me a surge of excitement knowing that I have a lot of wonderful things to do that would spice up my life.

My Intricate Thoughts

Every now and then, you would get hit by a strong urge to just scribble down thoughts that hit you out of nowhere. We are most often bombarded by ideas that encompass anything and everything, opinions, inspirations, theories or even beliefs that were triggered by the simplest of experiences. One would just have to give in and start jotting, or in this case - typing.

This space aims nothing more but to capture the humble and yet elaborate musings of a 20 something lady that just can’t help but indulge and share her passion for the written word.

I have chosen to name this space “Intricate Thoughts” as I believe that each entry that I’ll be able to post here will all start from an obscure idea that can and will only take shape once I have given in to that urge of transforming it to a more tangible form.
